BIG thank you goes out to our parents for being so flexible last week during conference week! It was so great getting to meet with you all and discuss the students' progress so far this year.
A few reminders: *This Friday is Picture Day Make-ups/Retakes. *This week is Red Ribbon Week! Look at what we are learning this week: Math: This week we are solving one-step word problems with multiplication and division. Students will also be reviewing the multiplication and division strategies in centers this week. Please encourage your student to do his/her math homework every night! Reading: Our second nine weeks is heavily focused on reading informational/non-fiction texts. Students have working to find the connections within the structure of a non-fiction text, such as sequence of events, cause and effect, and comparing and contrasting two things within a text. Writing: We are very excited to have started our informational writing unit for other second nine weeks. Students have been so engaged in their writing, because it is about topics they feel like they are experts. Science: We have moved on to our fossils unit for this nine weeks. Students are working on understanding what a fossil is, and how fossils are formed. This week we will be exploring what fossils can teach us. Grammar: Types of verbs and subject-verb agreement are two of our grammar topics we will be working on this week.

We had a great full week back re-familiarizing ourselves with the routines and procedures after a relaxing fall break off.
This week is the start of our second nine weeks, and I cannot believe we are finished with one-fourth of this school year already! Time is flying in Room 519! A few reminders: *This Thursday is an early release day for students. *Conference week is October 16-20. If the requested conference time/day on the red sheet does not work for you, please let me know a better time and day for us to meet! Look at what we are learning this week: Math: This week we are learning about the relationship between multiplication and addition. We'll be working with identifying different arithmetic patterns that involve both operations. Please encourage your student to complete the math homework every night. Reading: Our second nine weeks is heavily focused on reading informational/non-fiction texts. We will be diving into identifying the main idea and key details within a variety of informational passages. Writing: The students worked really hard all last nine weeks on personal narrative pieces. It has been great to see how proud they have been of the work they have completed, which resulted in a small moment final draft. We are focusing on informational writing for our second nine weeks where students will get to be experts on multiple topics. Science: The students have loved investigating the different types of soil this past week. We are continuing our soil unit (and will have our Soils Assessment this Friday) but are adding two big topics to the mix: Erosion and Weathering. Grammar: The students have done great at understanding and identifying the different kinds of nouns from quarter 1. Students will start the second nine weeks with learning about verbs. |
