A few reminders:
*Our 2nd & 3rd graders are performing this Thursday night during the PTA meeting. Students should report at 6:15 pm. We are excited to see you at The Park! *BINGO night is THIS Friday. If you haven't registered, please let me know so I can send the papers home to you. *The flu and other colds have been making their way around SPE. Click on the link for more information on ways to stay well this season: http://www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice/studentsupport/schoolhealth/flu.aspx Look at what we are learning this week: Math: We are continuing to work on partitioning shapes and identifying fractions this week. We have learned some new vocabulary words: numerator, denominator, partition, unit fraction. Students will continue to learn about how to model fractions over the next few weeks. Our math review this week is centered on graphing. Please continue to work at home with your student on his/her multiplication facts. Reading: We have made it halfway through our Peter Pan book and the students have been doing so well with our character analyses. This week, we are continuing on in our Peter Pan story, but will be focusing on understanding figurative language in whole group. We have started working with idioms, such as: hit the hay, raining cats and dogs, under the weather, etc. Writing: Students have produced some really interesting opinion topics so far this quarter. We are continuing to build our stamina as writers, while also practicing having a limited time to respond to writing prompts. We are working on our "seed" ideas, taking our opinion pieces through the writing process. Social Studies: We have just finished diving into the first part of our British Colonial America unit. Students have learned a lot about what life was like for the first colonists in the New England region. This week we are focusing on what life was like for colonists in the Mid-Atlantic region--picking out similarities and differences between the two along the way. Grammar: We are continuing to have discussions about adjectives and adverbs in our guided reading and in writing. We are adding in context clues to our discussions this week by practicing different ways to identify the meaning of an unknown word.

A few reminders:
*Please encourage students to read every night! *Our classroom won the December attendance challenge for our grade level- woohoo! Please continue to send your student to school every day, on time, if they are well. Attend today, achieve tomorrow! Look at what we are learning this week: Math: We will begin our fraction unit this week! This will be a long unit and it is one of the first times students will be using some of our new vocabulary. Please encourage students to use IXL at home in the afternoons and on the weekends for extra practice with previous, and current, skills. Reading: We have really gotten into Peter Pan this past week, and the students seem to be enjoying the characters and the story line. Continue to have conversations at home about what is happening in our story as each day we are trying to read further into the text. Students are working on analyzing the characters’ traits, motivations, and actions. Writing: We have begun our opinion writing unit, and it has been interesting to see what the students feel strongly about. We will be working on writing bravely and boldly this week, and students will start to choose their first “seed” idea that they will take through the writing process. Social Studies: I am so impressed with how engaged students were with our pollution and conservation unit. Students really seemed to enjoy learning about the different things they can do to help the environment, and hopefully they were able to share this information at home with you all. This week, students will be moving into our Social Studies unit: the 13 colonies. Students will be discussing the different colonies: New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern. We will be learning why the colonies were started and the differences between the colonies. Grammar: We made our way through working with Adjectives and are moving onto Adverbs. Encourage students to pick out both adjectives and adverbs as they read at home with you every night. We are off to a great start for this New Year. We have talked about setting some personal resolutions for 2018 and we are excited to already be in the third quarter.

I encourage you to ask your student every afternoon about what each chapter was about to help with comprehension. Writing: Opinion writing has begun in our classroom. This is always an interesting unit to have students be confident in their opinions on different topic, and to ultimately support these opinions using reasons and explanations in their writing. This week we are focusing on what is opinion writing. Science: We have just started our pollution and conservation of resources unit with a Freddie the Fish experiment. We are looking at the different effects of pollution on humans and the environment, as well as, ways we can conserve our resources (3 R's).
