Our last full week together is finally here! It has been a very busy month of May so far, and this week is no exception either.
A few reminders: *Our Third Grade Awards Ceremony will be Wednesday, May 16 at 8:30 in the Cafeteria. We hope to see you all there! *Field Day is Friday, May 18th. Please make sure students wear comfortable shoes for running and playing around! *May 22 and 23 are half days for students. They will not be allowed to bring book bags on these days either. Look at what we are learning this week: Math: We are coming back to working with elapsed time. Students will review how to tell time to the nearest minute, and how to solve elapsed time word problems. I highly encourage asking students to tell you the time at home, or the amount of time it takes to do certain activities--it is great practice for this important life skill. Reading: The students have been doing a great job of comparing and contrasting fiction and non-fiction texts these past few weeks. We have been asking and answering questions within these texts as well. They have grown so much in reading this year, and are tackling these texts with ease! Writing: Students will be finishing up their own fractured fairy tale this week. They have chosen the story elements from an original version of a fairy tale that they want to change, and have been working on their rough drafts so far. They are excited to publish these and bring them home for you all to see too. Science: HEAT! We have started our heat unit with a couple of different experiments to help us explore the transfer of heat energy. We will continue to dive into this hands-on topic this week as well. Grammar: Review of prefixes, suffixes, and root words!

It is hard to believe that May is already here, and we are in our last few weeks of the school year together. It has been a busy year, but we have had so much fun learning together along the way. We still have a few more things to get through this year, so it is important that students are staying focused—even with summer break being so close.
A few reminders: *Quarter 4 Progress Reports went home on Friday, April 27. Please look over them with your student, sign it, and send it back to school. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. *May 4: PBIS Glow Party. Students can purchase a ticket at school for 50 panther pause! *May 11: Career Day! We are so excited to hear from some of our parent volunteers! *May 14-18: BOOK FAIR! Such a great opportunity to get their hands on the latest books! *May 16: 3G Awards Day. You’re invited to join us at 8:30 am in the cafeteria for our grade level awards ceremony. *May 18: Field Day! Please make sure students come to school dressed in clothes (and shoes!) that they can run, jump, move, and have fun in. *May 22-23: Early Release! Our last two days of the 2017-2018 school year will be early release days. Please plan dismissal transportation accordingly. Look at what we are learning this week: Math: Due to Milestones testing, we did not have enough time to completely dive into our Geometry Unit. We will be revisiting quadrilaterals this week. Students will be looking at the similarities and differences of the types of quadrilaterals (trapezoids, parallelograms, rhombus, rectangles, squares). Reading: We have been reading so many fairy tales, and we are loving it! Students have gotten the opportunity to compare and contrast texts on a similar topic: for example, Jack and The Beanstalk versus Growing Plants (nonfiction passage). We will continue do this with a wide variety of fairy tales and nonfiction texts until the end of the school year. Writing: Reading and writing are going hand-in-hand this quarter. Students have just begun their own version of Little Red Riding Hood. We have focused on picking out the important parts of fairy tales, and the students have chosen a way to change it to make their own fractured fairy tale. They sound so interesting so far. We plan to finish these by Friday, so that students will start their own personal fairy tale next week. Social Studies: Students are learning about opportunity cost, and how it affects spending and saving choices. Students will be trying to understand how to maintain a budget. Grammar: We are continuously working on cursive writing this quarter. Students have fallen in love with it, and are constantly asking for more examples to try. Along with our cursive writing, students will be working on prefixes and suffixes, and how they can change a word. |
